The Ukrainian prime minister has been in our country since Wednesday evening. During that visit, he will repeat his request for fighter jets, predicts defense specialist Peter Wijninga. “Maybe he’ll figure it out eventually, but I don’t think it will happen anytime soon.”
Ukraine still needs more weapons. And Zelenski will tell Prime Minister Mark Rutte again during his visit to our country, expects Wijninga, a defense specialist at the HCSS. ‘Zelensky has a number of wishes, including those Western fighter planes. This has been mentioned before. Ukraine knows that Europe will soon replace F-16s with F-35s and hopes that the first used one will become available. It would be a nice solution for Kiev.’
But it takes time, thinks Wijninga. ‘I don’t think it will all happen very soon. Maybe Zelensky can expedite other deliveries through his visit, such as ammunition, which they urgently need more of.’
Russian missile production is declining
While Zelensky is here, several Russian missiles fell on Ukraine last night. “Even if those attacks aren’t as massive as they once were,” Wijninga says. “That’s because the Russians can’t produce that many missiles at once.”
Yesterday’s alleged Ukrainian attack on the Kremlin may have played a role in tonight’s missiles, the defense specialist said. ‘Although I think it is unlikely that Ukraine is behind that attack. They were small drones and small explosives. It looked tinkered. You couldn’t even really talk about a detonation.’
