Russia accuses Ukraine of carrying out a drone attack on the Kremlin with the aim of killing President Vladimir Putin. The Kremlin said two drones were used in the alleged attack, but were disabled by Russian defences.
In a statement on its website, the Kremlin said it considered the attack a planned terrorist act and an attempted assassination of the president of the Russian Federation.
“Two unmanned aerial vehicles were aimed at the Kremlin. Due to the timely intervention of the army and special services with the help of anti-radar systems, the vehicles were disabled,” the Kremlin press service and RIA Novosti news agency said.
“There were no casualties or material damage,” the Kremlin said, adding that “the Russian side reserves the right to react as and when it deems necessary.” “The president was not injured as a result of the terrorist attack,” the Kremlin said. According to the Tass news agency, Putin is at work in Novo-Ogaryovo outside Moscow, where he met with Nizhny Novgorod governor Gleb Nikitin.
Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin was not in the Kremlin at the time of the alleged attack. Peskov added that Putin would spend the day at the Novo-Ogoryovo state residence outside Moscow. An unverified video circulating on social media showed what appeared to be smoke billowing from the Kremlin at night. A second appeared to show fire on one of the Kremlin’s rooftop buildings.
Ukraine has so far not commented on the allegation.
