US response to Erdogan’s statement on ISIS: We have no news
The United States has made a statement on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s announcement that ISIS leader Abu Hussein al Qureshi was killed by Turkish intelligence in Syria.
According to VAO Turkish news, US State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel said he could not confirm the operation, but if Al Qureshi was indeed killed, it would be good news. “I saw the news,” Patel said. “It’s not something I can confirm at the moment and it would be better for the Turkish government to speak to get more information on this,” he said.
Vedant Patel was asked: “Is there any special reason why there is no communication between the Turkish and American governments regarding this news?”, “I did not say such a thing. What I am saying is that I am not in a position to confirm it. “We are in close contact with them on a variety of issues, including security in the region, and we will continue to do so.”
‘WE DID NOT SEE EVIDENCE’
Speaking to VOA Turkish, a US official, who did not disclose his name, stated that Washington has so far seen no evidence that Qureshi was killed.
President Erdoğan said in a statement the day before: “MIT has been following the alleged ISIS leader, code name Abu Hussein al Qureshi, for a long time. This person was neutralized by an operation carried out by our National Intelligence Organization in Syria yesterday. In other words, when the United States neutralizes the heads of ISIS, the heads of terrorist organizations here and there, they lift up the world. Here you go, right now we have neutralized not one, not two, not three, but how many of them related to DAESH. “How many of them related to the PKK have we neutralized?” he said.
ISIS did not make any statement. Syrian sources reported that the raid took place near the city of Cinderes, which is under the control of Turkish-backed groups and one of the areas hardest hit by the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on February 6.
ISIS selected al-Qurashi as its leader in November 2022, after its previous leader was killed in an operation in southern Syria.
