Switzerland assumes the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council
The permanent representative of Switzerland to the UN, Pascale Baeriswyl, held a press conference on the monthly agenda of the United Nations Security Council.
Baeriswyl said that this is the first time that Switzerland has undertaken this task and that it is a privilege, but also a responsibility.
THE UNITY OF THE COUNCIL WILL BE A PRIORITY
Stating that Switzerland will make efforts to “build bridges” during his tenure, Baeriswyl stressed that the “unity” of the Council will be the top priority within this framework.
Baeriswyl said his country contributes to peace and ceasefire efforts around the world, and they will focus on the agenda of multilateralism and peace during their presidency of the United Nations Security Council.
Baeriswyl said that Switzerland also supports the reform of the United Nations Security Council: “We believe that the United Nations Security Council should be better represented, especially on the African continent.” saying.
RETURN OF ASYLUM SEEKERS
When asked about the return of Syrian refugees to their countries, Baeriswyl noted that the return of refugees to their countries must be ensured in accordance with international refugee law and stated that the necessary conditions for their safe return must be created.
Baeriswyl pointed out that a political solution must be found mainly to the war in Syria, and that this is necessary for the refugees to return to their countries. (AA)
