Ukraine believes in Chinese mediation attempt
09:59 | Ukraine thinks it is “not unrealistic” for Beijing to play the role of mediator in the war with Russia. Foreign Minister Andriy Melnyk told German media.
“Of course, China has its own interests,” Melnyk said, “but I also believe that the country sees nothing but advantages in a just and peaceful solution to these hostilities.” He called the Russian invasion an “earthquake that shakes the whole world order.”
Earlier this week, Chinese President Xi Jinping called his Ukrainian counterpart Volodimir Zelensky. It was the first time the two had spoken since the invasion fourteen months earlier. According to Melnyk, that conversation was “an important step in relations with China and towards an end to Russian aggression”.
Kiev: Russia doesn’t know how to cut off Bachmut’s supply routes
00:28 | According to Kiev, Russia fails to cut supply routes to the besieged city of Bachmut. “The Russians have been talking about conquering that ‘road of life’ for several weeks, but in reality everything is different,” said military spokesman Sergi Cherevaty.
The focus of the war is currently Bachmut in eastern Ukraine. Both sides have been trying to gain control of the city for months. Although there is fighting on the road from Bachmut to Chasiv Yar, the Russians are failing to disrupt Ukrainian logistics, Cherevaty said. According to him, weapons, ammunition and food can still be supplied.
At present, Ukraine controls only a small part west of Bachmut. Ukrainian forces are holding their positions along the road and engineers have already built new roads to Bachmut. The army spokesman’s statements could not be independently verified.
