Turkish evacuation plane shot up in Sudan

The Turkish evacuation plane was reportedly fired upon by paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (HDK), which clashed with the army, during its landing at Sudan’s airport.

According to the news cited by Reuters, the Sudanese army said in a statement that one of the crew was injured and the fuel tank was damaged in the attack at Khartoum airport, but the plane landed.

In the statement of the Ministry of National Defense, “Our C-130 evacuation plane, which was heading to Wadi Sayidna for the mission to evacuate our citizens trapped in Sudan, where conflicts continue, was fired on by small arms. Our plane landed safely. Although there are no injuries among our personnel, the necessary controls are also carried out on our aircraft.

A FIRST IN CONFLICT IN SUDAN

Repair work was reported to have started on the plane, which landed at 7:25 a.m. local time.

The Sudanese army accused the HDK, which it describes as “rebel”, of “attempting to impede evacuation efforts with dangerous maneuvers”.

This was the first incident in which an evacuation plane belonging to a foreign country was damaged since the start of the conflict in Sudan. Many countries are conducting a tough operation to evacuate their citizens from Sudan.

Armed clashes broke out between the Sudanese army and the HDK on the morning of April 15 in the Sudanese capital Khartoum and other cities.

The disagreement between the army and the HDK over the military security reform, which provides for the “full participation of the HDK in the army”, had become a hot-button conflict in recent months. Sudan’s Ministry of Health reported that 512 people had been killed and 4,193 injured in the clashes as of the previous day.

The Sudanese military announced that it has decided to extend the current ceasefire for another 72 hours with the efforts of Saudi Arabia and the US, but fighting continues in Khartoum.

The Ministry of National Defense (MSB) announced that the evacuation of Turkish citizens stranded in Sudan is continuing, with the first group being brought safely into the country on planes belonging to the TAF.
