US President Joe Biden has officially announced that he will run in next year’s elections, but many Americans don’t like it at all. Yet Biden has so far lacked a serious competitor in his own field.
One of the leaders backing Biden is Bernie Sanders, his main competitor in the 2020 presidential election. That Sanders now supports him, US correspondent Jan Postma calls an ‘omen’. “Sanders really represents the left wing of the party, so his support suits Biden very well.”
Right now, Biden lacks a real competitor, Postma says. There may be more serious candidates, he says, but attacking an incumbent president isn’t easy.
Gloomy polls
Various polls show that Biden is not a very popular candidate for the presidency in 2024. According to the NBC news channel, only 5 percent of Americans support his candidacy. There are especially serious doubts about Biden’s suitability due to his advanced age. At 80, Biden is already the oldest president ever, and he will turn 86 after a possible second term. According to Postma, a good reason for ‘die Hard Democrats doubt Biden. “That’s why there’s going to be a lot of discussion on this age issue for now.”
The NBC poll also shows that nearly 40% find the thought of another Trump-Biden race exhausting. Postma calls it understandable. “You have an old man on both sides, who we already know all about at the same time, and what’s more, the previous campaign was very negative. Trump is still talking about it now, that negativity continues.’
According to BNR foreign commentator Bernard Hammelburg, Biden certainly has “the best papers” should there be another presidential battle between Trump and Biden.
