Voting for expats starts tomorrow

Expatriates will start going to the polls tomorrow for the 28th term presidential and parliamentary elections to be held on Sunday, May 14, 2023.

By the Supreme Electoral Council (YSK), polling committees were established in 73 countries and 156 foreign representations. Voting procedures, which will start tomorrow for foreign voters, will continue until May 9 at foreign representative offices.

The voting process will begin tomorrow at the customs gates prepared for those registered in the foreign electoral registry to vote. Voting at the customs gates will end on Sunday, May 14, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. Voters registered on the electoral roll abroad may vote for 24 hours, including holidays.

THERE ARE ABOUT 3.5 MILLION VOTERS

There are 3,416,098 registered voters abroad. The number of voters who will cast their vote abroad for the first time is 277,646. For these voters, 4,671 customs ballot boxes were established at customs.

Voting in foreign representations can be carried out between 09:00 and 21:00 local hours from Monday to Friday and on weekends, within the range of dates announced for that representation, and between 09:00 and 18:00 local hours in affiliated cities to the consulates general.

Foreign voters may vote at any of the designated representations or at any customs checkpoint where the ballot boxes are installed, and no prior appointment will be necessary for this procedure.

The YSK, which installed ballot boxes in countries where Turks live, brought ballot boxes to Belarus, Brazil, Estonia, Morocco, Montenegro, Republic of Korea, Libya, Lithuania, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Portugal, Slovakia and Tanzania for the first time. this year.

According to YSK data, the country with the highest number of voters was Germany with 1,501,152. Germany was followed by France with 397,086 voters and the Netherlands with 286,753 registered voters.

Due to the high number of voters in Germany, it will be possible to vote in 26 representative offices.

In the United States (USA), where 134 thousand 246 voters will cast their vote, they will be able to vote in 9 representations.

According to the data, the country with the lowest number of voters was Brazil with 581, while Nigeria, where ballot boxes will be installed for the first time in this election, was the second country with the lowest number of voters with 584 voters.

In France, which is determined to be the country with the second highest number of Turkish voters after Germany with 397,086 registered voters, it will be possible to vote in 9 representations. It will be possible to vote in Austria, 6 representations and 3 representations in Azerbaijan and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

On the other hand, if the Presidential Elections reach the second round, votes may be cast from May 20 to 24 at the representative offices designated for the second round to be held on Sunday, May 28.

After the end of the overseas voting process, the votes will be brought to Turkey by diplomatic couriers under high security, using the methods determined by the YSK. These votes will be stored in the secure area at the ATO Congress Fair Center in Ankara by the Presidency of the Overseas District Electoral Board.

The counting and issuance of foreign votes will be carried out under the supervision of the Presidency of the District Electoral Board Abroad.

In Turkey, on Sunday May 14 at 5:00 p.m., after the end of the voting process, it will be opened together with the rest of the ballot boxes.

In the presidential election, the votes cast abroad and at customs are directly reflected in the overall votes of the candidates. These votes are added to the total votes received by the candidates in Turkey.

Valid overseas votes are distributed proportionally to provincial constituencies, based on the number of voters in Turkey’s provinces and the votes received by parties in parliamentary elections.
