Former US President Donald Trump did not attend the first hearing of a new case against him today. The writer E. Jean Carroll accuses him of rape in the 90s and of slander. Trump denies.
Jury selection in the case began in New York on Tuesday, which will likely take a week or two. Trump himself probably won’t testify because Carroll’s lawyers have no plans to summon the former president.
Not her “type”
Carroll seeks compensation for the psychological distress inflicted on her. Trump (76) says 79-year-old Carroll only made her claims to promote her book. Also, she would not be “type” of her.
The case has no legal impact on Trump’s ability to be re-elected next year, but could damage his reputation. Trump has repeatedly been accused of sexual misconduct, something he always denies.
It is yet another case in which Trump is involved. Earlier this month, for example, he was charged in a case involving the payment of undisclosed money. Trump says he has done nothing wrong in all cases and often cries that he is the victim of a witch hunt.
