US extradites former leader of Peru

Toledo was sent to Barbadillo prison in the capital Lima after arriving in Peru under police surveillance.

Sentenced to 18 months in preventive detention, Toledo would share the same prison where former presidents Alberto Fujimori and Petro Castillo were also located.

In his statement to the press, the Minister of Justice, José Tello, indicated that a procedure will be carried out by the Ministry of Justice for Toledo, and indicated that the former president will remain in Barbadillo after he undergoes the corresponding sanitary controls.

Toledo (red jersey) was dispatched from the USA for an operation.

In its February 22 statement, the US decided to extradite former Peruvian President Toledo, accused of corruption.

Toledo is accused of accepting bribes for more than 30 million dollars from the Brazilian company Odebrecht.

Toledo denies the accusations.

Former Peruvian President Toledo has lived in the United States since he left office in 2006.
Toledo, who was detained by US authorities in 2019 after his extradition was requested, continued his 8-month detention under house arrest due to the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020.
