Jan Pronk: ‘China can play role in ending Sudanese conflict’ Related articles

China could play a role in ending the conflict in Sudan by talking to both powers. So says Jan Pronk, former minister and former UN special envoy for Sudan in BNR’s De Wereld. “I have the impression that these types of rulers may be more receptive to Chinese warnings than Western warnings.”

According to Pronk, the Sudan issue should be raised in the United Nations Security Council. Why? Because the members of the United Nations Security Council, who are usually sharply divided on most international issues, are unanimous in their condemnation of the ongoing violence. «There is the possibility for the Security Council to make a statement and not to intervene, but perhaps to send one or two members of the Security Council to speak with the two authorities. They must be able to be reunited.”

China has power and interests

And why China. ‘You need China. It’s not so much a partner or a competitor or a system rival, it’s a powerhouse on the world stage that you need to recognize as such,’ says Pronk. ‘You have to recognize that it’s a power, that it has influence in that world, that it has interests in Africa. And then you will have to turn to China and correctly perceive its self-interest.’ According to Pronk, everyone benefits from preventing the disintegration of a country like Sudan, such as Congo for example.

In addition to the United Nations Security Council, Pronk cites three other bodies that could play a role in ending the conflict: the African Union, the Arab League and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development.
