Yellen Awaits Balancing Act on US Policy in China Related Articles

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will speak later today on current US policy toward China. There is a lot going on between the two countries, says US correspondent Lennart Zandbergen. “And Yellen now wants to clarify how the United States is in the game.”

At recent IMF and World Bank meetings, Yellen also had several conversations with Chinese government representatives. The former Fed chief is expected to travel to Beijing for talks soon.

balloons

An earlier visit by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was canceled after an incident involving Chinese spy balloons over the United States. In addition, tensions around Taiwan are rising. “Even the United States is on a crusade of sorts to ensure that China has less access to advanced chips,” Zandbergen says.

Both Democrats and Republicans are in favor of strict Chinese policies. “Both are not afraid of the measures, and both sides also support Taiwan. They are, as it were, fighting against each other,’ says Zandbergen.

Yellen should factor this into her speech. And it’s not an easy task, she thinks. The official announcement of Yellen’s speech goes on to talk about how both countries can compete with each other in a “healthy and fair way”. But, says Zandbergen, “the United States above all wants to guarantee internal security. Indirectly they also refer to Taiwan and other countries with which China has border conflicts.

Russia

At the same time, Yellen will also want to find an opening to improve cooperation, Zandbergen thinks. This also depends on how far Chinese President Xi wants to go in supporting Russia in the war against Ukraine. Some time ago it seemed that China wanted to help the Russians more, but now they have backed out. At the same time, US President Joe Biden doesn’t want to punch the Chinese too much.’

According to Zandbergen, on the one hand the United States wants to seek rapprochement with the country. But on the other hand, Americans also want to be less and less dependent on other countries. “There will be enough openings, but there will be a lot of balancing. Both countries understand each other well diplomatically, but after incidents like spy balloons or tensions in Taiwan, things get out of hand again.’
