Clashes continue in Sudan despite ceasefire

Clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (HDK) in Sudan continue despite the international community’s call for a ceasefire.

As shots are heard around the army general command and the Presidential Palace in the capital Khartoum, thick smoke rises from the conflict zones. The residents of the city are also trying to escape from the city.

Army spokesman Nebil Abdullah said in a statement on state television: “The international community offered a 24-hour ceasefire proposal and the Armed Forces immediately accepted this proposal. “The rebel militias did not respect the ceasefire and continued to harass the citizens,” he said. Abdullah continued his words as follows:

“The harassment, looting and robbery of citizens by the rioters made it impossible to implement the ceasefire. It was not possible for us to see the exposure of our citizens and not intervene and remain silent. The rebel media argue that we are not respecting the ceasefire. We did not reject the ceasefire, but we stipulated that they comply with the ceasefire requirements, which they did not. We will continue to guarantee security in the country.”

Stating that HDK leaders have no control over their troops, Abdullah said: “They act like city gangs. “They are doing things that endanger people’s lives,” he said.

The commander of the Sudanese army, General Abdulfettah al-Burhan, in a statement to CNN yesterday, declared that they would respect the ceasefire for 24 hours, starting at 18:00 local time, in response to calls from the international community. HDK commander Muhammed Hamdan Dagalu also announced that they have accepted US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s 24-hour ceasefire proposal. (AA)
