The death toll rises rapidly in conflicts in Sudan
Clashes between the army and members of the Rapid Support Forces (HDK), declared insurgents in Sudan, continue on their third day without ceasing.
Ongoing clashes around the army headquarters and the Presidential Palace in the capital Khartoum, as well as contradictory statements by the two parties, lead to a misunderstanding of the real situation on the ground.
Sudanese state television, which came under army control and began broadcasting again, stated that the army had seized the HDK headquarters in the capital and in many states. It was said on the news that HDK tried to destroy the channel’s infrastructure when it could not interfere with the broadcast on state television, and many HDK members in the capital and provinces turned themselves in to the army with their equipment.
According to the statement of the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors, 97 civilians were killed and 942 people, including soldiers, were injured in clashes between the army and HDK militias in the capital, Khartoum, and in several cities.
ARMY: WE’RE IN CONTROL
The Sudanese army denied reports that the HDK had taken control of the army headquarters and the Presidential Palace in Khartoum. The army claimed that some “rebel militia” spokespersons in the media published a large amount of fake news to mislead the public and claimed that there were limited clashes around the army headquarters in the capital Khartoum and downtown Khartoum.
“The armed forces retain full control of all their headquarters. Reports circulating that the enemy leadership has seized the residence of the military commander or the Presidential Palace do not reflect the truth.
The Sudanese army claimed that the air force carried out strikes against a number of “enemy” targets, adding: “The strikes will continue until the rebel militias, who have started looting the properties of defenseless citizens in the capital with threats, are liquidated”. .”
HDK, on the other hand, announced in a statement that it had achieved “extensive victories” in the conflict against the army and seized “full control” of the Palace of the Republic in and around Khartoum. The statement said: “We are in a serious battle to put an end to the coup group at the head of the army.”
On the morning of April 15, armed clashes broke out between the Sudanese army and the HDK paramilitary in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, and in several cities. The disagreement between the army and the HDK over the military security reform, which provides for the “full participation of the HDK in the army”, had become a hot-button conflict in recent months.
