Russian dissident journalist jailed for 25 years

Vladimir Kara-Murza, one of the opponents of Vladimir Putin’s government in Russia, was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

The 41-year-old opposition activist and journalist was found guilty of “treason” for criticizing the invasion of Ukraine, in court today. Kara-Murza, who denied the allegations and said “I’m proud of what I said,” chanted “Russia will be free” after the sentence was announced.

ENGLAND CALLS RUSSIAN AMBASSADOR TO MINISTRY

The prison sentence handed down to the Russian dissident, who also holds a British passport, sparked a huge reaction in London. Britain protested the decision by summoning the Russian ambassador to the country to the Foreign Ministry.

Vladimir Kara-Murza, detained in Moscow last year, supported Western countries’ sanctions against Russia over the invasion of Ukraine. The Kremlin accused Kara-Murza of “carrying out disinformation activities against Russia,” saying the Russian military committed war crimes in Ukraine.
