Notable move in historic prisoner exchange
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced that Saudi Arabia will take a unilateral step to extradite prisoners to Yemen, following the three-day simultaneous prisoner exchange between the warring parties in Yemen.
As part of the three-day prisoner exchange, which was carried out under the auspices of the ICRC, nearly 900 prisoners are scheduled to return after fighting ends on Sunday. The prisoner swap deal is an important step in building confidence in peace talks between the Saudi proxies and the Iran-backed Houthis.
In a statement on Twitter, the Houthi deputy foreign minister said that 104 Yemenis detained in Saudi Arabia will be extradited outside the prisoner swap deal.
The warring parties agreed to release 887 prisoners in Switzerland last month and agreed to discuss exchanging more prisoners in May. (Reuters)
