The Uttar Pradesh government feared violent unrest following the killings and banned gatherings of more than four people across the state. “The state government imposed restrictive measures following the murders of Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf Ahmed, who were members of a major mafia involved in land grabbing and assassination cases,” a senior police official said.

“We don’t want any form of protest to gain momentum,” the official said anonymously as he was not authorized to speak to the press. The state government, controlled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party, has launched a judicial inquiry into the murders.
180 criminal suspects
Last week, police killed Atiq Ahmed’s son in Jhansi city. He was wanted in connection with a murder case being investigated as part of a larger land mafia investigation in Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh Police have killed more than 180 criminal suspects in meetings over the past six years.
The head of the opposition party, Samajwadi, said the killing of his former party colleague in police custody showed the inability of the ruling Bharatiya Janata party to bring law and order to Uttar Pradesh. “When someone can be shot dead in the middle of the police security cordon, what about the safety of the general public,” said Samajwadi’s Akhilesh Yadav in a tweet.
Before losing the election in 2014, Ahmed was an MP with Samajwadi and later with the regional Apna Dal party.
