Dozens of migrants found in abandoned van in Mexico

It was reported that 209 irregular migrants were found in the back of an abandoned truck in the Mexican state of Veracruz.

In the statement from the National Institute of Migration (INM), it was indicated that a large number of immigrants were detected in the bed of a truck on the Villahermosa-Coatzacoalcos highway in the provincial city of Nuevo Teapa. After the screams and shouts that could be heard from the bed of the truck, the security forces intervened and rescued 209 irregular migrants.

It was shared that the immigrants found were from Guatemala, El Salvador, Ecuador and Honduras. Twenty-three of the migrants, including young children, were hospitalized with complaints of thirst and lack of oxygen.

The number of immigrants caught trying to cross the US border illegally was recorded to be 2.76 million people in 2022. According to data from Mexican authorities, an estimated 8.76 million undocumented immigrants live in the country.

Due to problems such as violence, unemployment and poverty in their countries, irregular migrants trying to reach the US to establish a better life often fall into the hands of human smugglers. Many irregular immigrants, who have left Central American countries for many years, try to reach the US through Guatemala and Mexico. (AA)
