North Korea launched another ballistic missile into the Sea of Japan on Thursday, neighbors South Korea and Japan said. Japanese authorities have urged residents of the northern island of Hokkaido to stay indoors because the missile could land off the coast there. That notice was later withdrawn and attributed to an error. Air traffic to and from Hokkaido has also been disrupted.
The missile eventually ended up in the sea outside Japan’s so-called exclusive economic zone, the country’s coast guard said. According to the South Korean military command, it was a medium- or long-range missile launched near the North Korean capital Pyongyang.
New type
According to South Korea it would also be a new type of missile that does not use liquid fuel. Such rockets are more stable, easier to transport and faster to launch. During a military parade in Pyongyang in February, the North Korean military displayed missiles that analysts say may belong to this type.
North Korea has conducted more than 15 missile tests since February. This also included tests with ICBMs. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has convened his cabinet to discuss the latest launch.
