Government and opposition discuss judicial regulation in Israel
In a written statement from the Israeli presidential office, Herzog received representatives of the government and the main opposition party “The Future Is” led by Yair Lapid and the Blue-White Alliance led by Benny Gantz at the Presidential Residence in West Jerusalem.
In the statement, it was indicated that experts in constitutional law and consultants, representing both parties, attended the meeting, which took place within the framework of the dialogue on judicial regulation.
During the meeting, which lasted for long hours in a “positive atmosphere”, it was stated that the continuation of the negotiations intensified after Pesach (Pesach) was discussed.
DEFERRED JURISDICTION
The “judicial reform” announced by Israel’s Justice Minister Yariv Levin on January 5 includes regulations limiting the powers of the Supreme Court and allowing the government a say in judicial appointments.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on March 27 that he was postponing the judicial regulation, sparking mass protests and strikes across the country.
Despite the postponement decision, the Netanyahu government, which did not back down, said it would bring the controversial regulation back to Parliament in early May. (AA)
