Chinese warplanes and warships surround the island state of Taiwan for the second day of a three-day military exercise. The United States is calling for restraint and warning that it is closely monitoring Beijing’s actions.
According to Chinese state media, “precision strikes against key targets on the island of Taiwan and surrounding waters” will be simulated on Sunday. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry reports that nine Chinese warships and 58 aircraft are operating around the island.
State visit
The exercise follows a visit by Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen to the United States. There he met the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy. This has sparked anger in Beijing, as the Chinese government regards Taiwan as its own territory. The three-day military training serves as a warning against “provocations by separatists seeking Taiwan independence,” a Chinese military spokesman said earlier.
