EU: We are concerned about events in Israel, Palestine and Lebanon
The High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Relations and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, recalled that last night there were attacks in Tel Aviv in which an Italian tourist also died, and affirmed that the EU condemns these acts of violence.
Noting that the increase in violence followed increased tensions and conflicts at holy sites, including the use of force by Israeli police at Masjid al-Aqsa, Borrell said:
“The EU condemns acts of violence at holy sites and reminds us that the status of these sites must be preserved. We also condemn the indiscriminate rocket attacks against Israel from Gaza and Lebanese territory. We also expressly condemn the terrorist attacks that killed two Israelis and seriously injured one.”
Borrell affirmed that Israel has the right to defend itself, but the response must be proportionate, and called for an immediate end to the violence and to do everything possible to prevent the expansion of the conflict. (AA)
