Brazil decided to return to UNASUR after 4 years

Brazil, which left UNASUR under former President Jair Bolsonaro, decided to return to the union with the decision of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Brazil’s participation in UNASUR is expected to be made official at the regional summit of heads of state, which is expected to take place in Brazil at the end of May.

On the other hand, among the countries that announced that they would return to UNASUR on March 22, in Argentina, Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero confirmed that they returned to the union as an official member state at the instruction of President Alberto Fernández.

UNASUR had drawn attention as one of Lula da Silva’s great promises during his presidential campaign.

The countries that are currently members of UNASUR are Venezuela, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and Peru. UNASUR was founded in 2008 against US influence in the region, with the support of former Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez.

Six UNASUR countries suspended their membership on April 21, 2018, due to disagreements over who would lead the bloc. Bolivia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay and Peru announced that they had decided to temporarily leave UNASUR at that time due to differences of opinion on the choice of the Secretary General.
