FINAL DEADLINE OF MAY 21
The first round of the presidential elections in Montenegro was held on March 19 and the second round of the elections was held on April 2, as none of the 7 candidates obtained more than 50 percent of the vote.
Incumbent President Djukanovic, who got 35.3 percent of the vote in the first round, was defeated by receiving 40 percent of the vote in the second round.
His rival, former Economy Minister Jakov Milatovic, won 28.9 percent of the vote in the first round, and was elected the country’s eighth president by garnering 60 percent of the vote in the second round.
Djukanovic had argued that his rival Milatovic was “the man for Serbia and Russia” during the electoral process and that if he won the election, the country would move closer to Russia.
Djukanovic’s term expires on May 21.
