Anyone who helps Russia in its fight against Ukraine is complicit in violating international law. French President Emmanuel Macron said this at a press conference during his visit to Beijing. “We also made it clear that anyone who helped the aggressor would be complicit in a violation of international law.”
According to Macron, who landed this morning in Beijing, the fear that China will supply weapons to Russia “has been expressed by many and we are also expressing it”. The French newspaper Le Monde writes it. Despite his threatening language, Macron said he would not threaten sanctions in his meeting with Xi Jinping tomorrow because “threats are never a good way.”

However, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which Beijing has never formally condemned, is at the top of the list of topics Macron wants to discuss tomorrow during his meeting with Xi Jinping. According to Macron, the war, which he calls “imperialist and colonial”, has “violated many of the principles of the United Nations Charter”. In this context, he underlines that both China and France are members of the Security Council and therefore have a duty to defend these principles “resolutely”.
“I think defending it also means that we have to move together and try to find a way to peace,” Macron added. According to him, China can play an important role in resolving the conflict, thanks to its strong ties with Russia and bearing in mind Xi’s recent state visit to Putin. Macron then defined a dialogue with the Beijing authorities as “essential”.
