Russia assumes the presidency of the UN Security Council

Vassily Nebenzia, Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN, held a press conference on the agenda of his country’s UN Security Council Presidency.

Speaking about accusations that Russia will use the presidential term to his advantage for anti-Ukrainian propaganda, Nebenzia stressed that he will exercise Russia’s presidency in a “professional” manner, as in previous terms, saying: “Russia does not abuse the privileges of The presidency. Our national position is one thing, the Presidency of the UN Security Council is another matter. We value this (authority). Those who claim otherwise are biased.” he said.

LAVROV WILL BE PRESIDENTIAL

Noting that countries do not have the right to determine who will occupy the presidency, Nebenzia said: “As long as the current UN Security Council and world order continues, the rules of procedure will not change. It is clearly established which country will assume the presidency”. she used his statements.

Nebenzia shared the information that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will be in New York on April 24 and 25 and will chair two UN meetings.

Noting that Lavrov could also meet with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken if there is a demand from the other side, Nebenzia stated that “the request must come from the US side.”

“THE ICC DECISION IS STUPID”

On the other hand, Nebenzia described as “stupid” the arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin, in the framework of the investigation carried out by the International Criminal Court (ICC) into the crimes committed in Ukraine on March 18, and affirmed that the decision had no effect in Russia.

Regarding the Black Sea Grain Corridor Agreement, Nebenzia stated that the provisions of the memorandum of understanding signed between the UN and Russia on the export of Russian food products and fertilizers were not fulfilled.

CHAIRMAN OF THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL OF RUSSIA

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmitro Kuleba described the Russian presidency, which officially began on April 1, as “the worst April Fools’ joke in history.”

The US permanent representative to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, told reporters that they expect Russia to take a professional stance, but that they also anticipate using the presidency to “spread disinformation and further their own agenda.”

The presidency of the UN Security Council will pass to Switzerland in May.

Russia last assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council in February 2022. At the same time, Russia’s attack on Ukraine had begun. (AA)
