Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin failed to stay in power. His centre-left Social Democratic Party (SDP) was narrowly defeated in the elections and has to settle for third place. The right-wing National Coalition Party (NCP) got 20.8 percent of the vote, the populist Finnish National Party 20.1 and the Marins SDP 19.9 percent of the vote. The turnout was 71.9%.
“Democracy has spoken, the Finnish people have cast their votes and celebrating democracy is always a wonderful thing,” said Marin, congratulating the winners during his election speech. “It’s a really good performance, even though I didn’t finish earlier today,” she told her fans in Helsinki.
Economic growth
The winner is the leader of the PNC, the former finance minister Petteri Orpo, 53 years old. Orpo said his party would lead the coalition talks. “With these results, talks on forming a new government will be led by the National Coalition Party,” Orpo said in his victory speech. “The main task of the next government is to restore our economy and increase economic growth.”
“With these results, talks on forming a new government will be led by the National Coalition Party,” Orpo said. He called the main task of the next government to restore the economy and increase economic growth. “Also, it is very important to work on NATO-Finland.”
“And the message to Putin is: get out of Ukraine because you will lose”
Solidarity
Orpo also said that Finland will continue to show solidarity with Kiev. “Ukraine first: we stand with you,” Orpo wrote from the Associated Press during the NCP victory event. “We cannot accept this terrible war. And we will do whatever it takes to help Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, because they are fighting for us. This is obvious. “And the message to Putin is: get out of Ukraine because you will lose.”
The youngest prime minister ever
Marin (37) became the world’s youngest prime minister when she took over the leadership of the SDP in 2019, and with it the Finnish premiership. You successfully led the country through the Covid pandemic and nearly brought it into NATO – that honor will most likely be taken by Orpo. Marin was very popular, particularly with young and female voters, and was a role model for a new generation of young women leaders.
However, critics sometimes called his behavior inappropriate for his position. For example, Marin had to apologize and undergo a drug test, but she also defended the right to party after photos and videos emerged showing Marin drinking and dancing with her friends.
