Montenegro will elect president

The people of the Balkan country of Montenegro will vote tomorrow in the second round of the presidential election to determine the country’s eighth president.

Montenegrin voters will choose tomorrow between the current president Milo Djukanovic of the Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro (DPS), who won 35.3 percent of the vote in the first round of the presidential elections held on March 19, and the leader of the European Movement, Jakov Milatovic, who received 29.2 percent of the vote.

While Djukanovic is known for his pro-Western and pro-European Union (EU) politics, Milatovic, supported by Serbs in the country, is said to bring Montenegro closer to Serbia and Russia.

Turnout in the first round of the presidential elections was 63.1%.

The Montenegrin State Electoral Institution (DİK) announced after the elections that the second round of the elections would take place on April 2, as none of the candidates received more than 50 percent of the vote.

DİK noted that there are 542,154 registered voters in the country and recorded that the turnout rate in the first round was 63.1 percent.

In Montenegro, the last of which was held in 2018, the president is elected every 5 years. (AA)
