Earlier than expected, the Manhattan Grand Jury announced it would prosecute former President Donald Trump. “It is painful that a former president has to leave his fingerprints on the court,” says Jan Postma from Washington.
For Trump himself, the indictment eventually came even faster than expected, US correspondent Jan Postma suspects. In the last few days he seemed more and more convinced that things would work out. First reports came out that it would take another month.’
The former president immediately responded on Truth Social, his social media platform. “It was a bit of a mix of things he always says,” Postma says. “That it’s a witch hunt, that he’s innocent and hasn’t been in a relationship. He attacks the accuser and calls him a communist.’
Tuesday in Manhattan
Trump is due to report to the attorney’s office in Manhattan on Tuesday. “This promises to be a huge media circus,” Postma says. “NYPD expects the worst. He’s already on high alert on Friday.’
Exactly what the charges against Trump will be remains exciting for a while. This will come out on Tuesday when Trump is told. Obviously he has to do with Stormy Daniels, that’s clear. But we still don’t know exactly what it is. Some media claim that dozens of laws have been broken, but this cannot yet be verified.’
“Some media say dozens of laws have been broken, but this still cannot be verified”
Postma finds it surprising that almost all Republicans strongly support the former president. “The allies you expect it from. But also some potential rivals for the 2024 election, such as Ron DeSantis and Deputy Prime Minister Mike Pence”.
Probably going straight home
The US correspondent does not believe Trump should go to jail on Tuesday. He’ll probably be home on Tuesday. The punishment he will receive if found guilty will likely be a fine. So I don’t think we’ll see Trump behind bars right away. But of course it hurts that a former president has to have his picture taken and fingerprinted in court.”
