MEPs: Stop police brutality in France
A group of members of the European Parliament (EP) demanded an end to police violence against those protesting the pension reform in France.
Members of the Left Group in the EP demonstrated in front of the EP building in Brussels, the capital of Belgium. More than 20 lawmakers, carrying signs reading “Stop Police Violence in France,” accused the French police of brutalizing the protesters.
In the statement made by the Left Group in the EP, “The people in France faced police violence while exercising their right to democratic demonstration. Today, MEPs are giving a message from Parliament against police violence. There is no excuse for violence. “We cannot tolerate abuse of power,” the statement said.
Demonstrations and strikes have long been taking place in France against the controversial pension reform, which includes raising the retirement age from 62 to 64, which the government passed directly without a vote in parliament. (AA)
