“We will contribute 690 million dollars of funds for the advancement of democracy in the world”

Biden: We will provide 690 million dollars in financing for the advancement of democracy in the world

Hosted by the USA, Costa Rica, the Netherlands, South Korea, and Zambia, the “2nd World Cup” will take place online and end tomorrow. At the Democracy Summit, Biden spoke about “Global Challenges.”

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskiy, President of Slovakia Zuzana Caputova, President of Malawi Lazarus Chakwera, President of Ecuador Guillermo Lasso Mendoza, President of Moldova Maya Sandu, President of Niger Mohamed Bazoum, President of Panama Laurentino Cortizo Cohen and Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen joined online.

Referring to the January 6 congressional raid in his speech, Biden said American voters reject “extremists” who harm American democracy.

Biden said that while democracies are getting stronger around the world, autocracies are getting weaker. Biden also said that democratic administrations stand united with kyiv against Russia’s attacks on Ukraine.

Announcing that they have allocated $690 million in funding to support democratic programs, Biden stated that they plan to work with Congress to allocate $9.5 billion over the next 3 years, with the goal of promoting democracy around the world.

Biden also referred to the effects of technology on democracy, speaking of the decree he signed this week banning spyware.

Ukrainian President Zelenskiy stated that Ukrainians are fighting for democracy and freedom and said that the enemies of democracy must lose.

Accusing Russia of totalitarianism, Zelenskiy noted that sanctions against this country should be implemented faster and stronger.

CRITICISM AGAINST THE “DEMOCRACY SUMMIT”

The invitation of many countries deemed “suspicious” to be democratic at this year’s Democracy Summit was criticized, and Biden’s definition of democracy was described as “double standards.”

Time magazine ran the headline “Biden’s Democracy Summit is Hypocrisy’s Summit” regarding the Democracy Summit.

The participation of countries such as India, the Philippines, Brazil, Iraq, Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the summit was criticized in the international press. (AA)
