First lady Jill Biden and Sheryl Crow were among those expected to attend a candlelight vigil on Wednesday in memory of the three children and three adults killed in a shooting at a private Christian school in Nashville.

Crow would be performing, along with fellow musicians Margo Price and Ketch Secor, the Nashville mayor’s office said in a press release.

The lineup also featured civic leaders, including Mayor John Cooper and Police Chief John Drake.

Cooper said the vigil would “honor the lives of the victims and uplift the survivors and families of the Covenant School.

Earlier in the day, Pope Francis offered his condolences to the city and offered prayers for those affected by the violence.

In a telegram, Francis asked the Bishop of Nashville, J. Mark Spalding, to convey the assurance of his prayers.

He joins the entire community in mourning for the children and adults who died and commends them in the loving embrace of the Lord Jesus, read the telegram sent by the Secretary of State of the Vatican in the name of the Pope.

In other developments, Nashville city officials Wednesday declined to immediately release 911 calls about the shooting because of the ongoing investigation.

Police have said a 28-year-old former student drove to the school on Monday morning, shot out the glass doors and shot three 9-year-olds, a janitor, a substitute teacher and the principal of the school.

Authorities have not yet determined the shooter’s motive, but said the attacker had not targeted any specific victims.

The dead children were identified as Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs and William Kinney. The adults killed were Katherine Koonce, 60, the school principal; substitute teacher Cynthia Peak, 61; and custodian Mike Hill, which is 61.

GOP responds to Nashville shooting with anti-trans rhetoric

Among the featured performers at the vigil, Price has been particularly vocal about Gov. Bill Lee’s stance on state gun laws, tweeted in response to shootings: Our kids are dying and getting shot in school, but are you more concerned about drag queens than smart gun laws? You have blood on your hands.

Lee said late Tuesday that Peak was a good friend of his wife, Maria, and that the two planned to meet for dinner that day after Peak’s work.

Maria woke up this morning without one of her closest friends, Lee said in a video statement, adding that his wife once taught Peak and Koonce. The women, he said, have been family friends for decades.

The shooting sparked an outpouring of prayers and support.

While pundits and politicians try to understand the pointless, they didn’t really ask why. We know why we live in a broken, fallen world, said Pastor George Grant, a leader of the Nashville Presbytery associated with the school.

The Nashville gunman, who was “under medical treatment for emotional disorder,” used three guns, police say

In a blog post published Wednesday, Grant shared how reports of an active shooter at the school interrupted a planning meeting for the rectory that included Chad Scruggs, a Covenant Presbyterian Church pastor and father of one of the shootings.

We poured empty into the hallway, knitting, eyes clouded with disbelief, horror, and grief. … Our worst fears were realized, Grant wrote.

Police said the shooter, whom they identified as Audrey Hale, was under medical treatment for an undisclosed emotional disorder and was not on police radar before the attack.

Police have provided unclear information about Hale’s gender.

For hours on Monday, police identified the shooter as a woman. Later that day, the police chief said Hale was transgender. In an email Tuesday, a police spokesman said Hale was assigned female at birth but used male pronouns on a social media profile. Then the chief later used feminine pronouns to refer to Hale.
