The detained Catalan politician is released
Catalan politician Clara Ponsati, who fled Spanish jurisdiction after separatist attempts in Catalonia and became a member of the European Parliament (EP), was released at midnight after being arrested in Barcelona.
It has been announced that Ponsati, who has been living in Scotland and Belgium for 5 years because he escaped from Spanish jurisdiction, has returned to Brussels after his release and will attend a session to be held in the EP this afternoon.
Ponsati is accused of disobeying state institutions, including the ban on working only in public institutions, with some legal changes made by the government in Spain at the end of 2022.
Spanish Supreme Court Judge Pablo Llarena reportedly summoned Ponsati to court on April 24 to give his testimony about this crime.
Ponsati, who has a search and arrest warrant in Spain, was arrested yesterday by the Catalan police after a press conference in Barcelona and taken to court.
INDEPENDENCE REFERENDUM IN 2017 FIRED
The 66-year-old MEP from the Union for Catalonia party fled from Spanish justice on October 30 after the illegal independence referendum held in Catalonia on October 1, 2017 and the unilateral declaration of independence declared in the autonomous parliament of Catalonia on October 28 . 2017. He was the first of the Catalan politicians to return to Spain after almost 5 years.
The current left-wing coalition government in Spain, the result of an agreement with the Catalan separatist political parties that receives support from abroad, made a change in the penal code at the end of 2022 that alleviates the crime of rebellion against the State, thus paving the way for way for the return of the Catalan politicians who fled abroad.
