Mitsotakis announces date for general elections in Greece
Greek Prime Minister Kiriakos Mitsotakis announced that the country’s general elections will take place on May 21. Speaking at the televised cabinet meeting, Mitsotakis said: “The country and its citizens need an open path. “Elections will take place at the end of my four-year term, as promised from the beginning,” he said.
The term of the New Democracy-led government ends in July.
Polls show the right-wing New Democracy leading the way, but after the February 28 train accident, the left-wing Syriza party is starting to close the gap. The train accident disaster, in which at least 57 people lost their lives, sparked huge anti-government protests in the country.
Elections will be held according to the new electoral system based on proportional representation. According to this, if a party does not obtain a majority in the first round, the result of the election will go to the second round.
