Russia-Armenia tensions ‘arrest Putin’
The International Criminal Court (ICC) debate has now added to the recent tension between Russia and Armenia.
Moscow warned the Yerevan administration that collaborating with the ICC, which issued an arrest warrant for Russian leader Vladimir Putin, would have “very bad consequences”.
The ICC decided to arrest Putin, whom it accused of committing war crimes for sending hundreds of children to Russia from Ukraine, and this step provoked a harsh reaction in Moscow.
Armenia has also recently given the green light to become part of the ICC. Although the Supreme Court of Armenia approved the Treaty of Rome, it was expected that the parliament would accept the treaty.
If the ICC decision is valid in Armenia, it is on the agenda that Putin be arrested when he goes to this country.
‘BIULE’S RELATIONSHIPS WERE A GREAT HURT’
According to the Russian news agency RIA, Russia called Armenia’s plan “unacceptable” and issued a stark warning to Yerevan. In the statement, it was noted that Armenia’s recognition of the ICC decisions would lead to “destructive consequences in bilateral relations.”
“Moscow finds Yerevan’s plans to recognize the ICC Treaty of Rome unacceptable,” a Russian Foreign Ministry source said.
It is claimed that the Yerevan passage may hamper Putin’s travel plans. Among the countries that the Russian leader may visit this year are Turkey and South Africa, which is part of the Treaty of Rome.
The former Soviet country of Armenia, which is among Russia’s traditional allies, was among the countries that reacted to the occupation in Ukraine.
Relations between the two countries have also been strained recently due to the discussions that took place after the peace agreement with Azerbaijan. Armenia argues that after the Nagorno-Karabakh war with Azerbaijan, it did not make enough efforts to implement the deal that Russia brokered.
