UN publishes report on treatment of prisoners of war

In the United Nations report entitled “Treatment of prisoners of war in the context of the armed attack of the Russian Federation against Ukraine”, it was announced that both countries committed human rights violations with regard to prisoners of war and that some prisoners were executed.

In the report published by the United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR), the rapprochements and violations by Russia and Ukraine towards prisoners of war between February 24, 2022 and February 23, 2023 were discussed.

OHCHR stated that Russia executed 15 prisoners of war and, regarding the treatment of prisoners of war held by the Russian Federation, “OHCHR has documented serious violations of International Human Rights and serious violations of International Humanitarian Law that may constitute war crimes. These include the extrajudicial execution of 15 prisoners of war, the use of prisoners of war as human shields, the lack of medical attention by prisoners of war, and torture or other ill-treatment in exchange for information. OHCHR also documented the widespread looting of prisoners of war’s belongings and evacuation in overcrowded vehicles in inhumane conditions with their hands tied and blindfolded, without access to water or toilets. OHCHR interviewed 203 Ukrainian prisoners.

The report states: “OHCHR recalls that the Russian Federation has denied access to the relevant facilities. Therefore, the analysis only reflects cases and details that can be verified by other means. “Analysis of the available information reveals extremely worrying patterns.”

In the report, which shares the information that Ukraine executed 25 prisoners of war without trial, regarding the treatment of prisoners of war held by Ukraine, “OHCHR also stated that through information gathered from sources open, on-site visits and interviews with witnesses, at least 25 Russian POWs POWs were detained without trial after their capture. Regarding the women who were prisoners of war in the report, the OHCHR stated: “As a result of individual interviews with 24 women prisoners of war, it was determined that women prisoners of war held by the Russian Federation were treated differently from male prisoners. of male warfare Women were detained separately from men and experienced less physical violence overall.
