Reaction to the judicial regulation! Thousands of people took to the streets
Israelis, who hold nationwide demonstrations every Saturday night against judicial regulation by the far-right coalition government led by Prime Minister Netanyahu, once again descended on the squares.
While Prime Minister Netanyahu did not back down on the judicial regulation bill, which is expected to be discussed in Parliament this week, groups organizing mass protests across the country assess the bill as a ” interference with the judiciary”.
Tens of thousands of Israelis participated in demonstrations in cities such as Tel Aviv, Haifa, West Jerusalem, Birussebi and Netanya.
195 THOUSAND PEOPLE ATTENDED
Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in front of the Government Complex on Kaplan Street in Tel Aviv, which hosts the largest demonstration, as it does every week.
According to Israel Television Channel 12, 195,000 people attended the demonstrations in Tel Aviv.
The protesters carried banners reading “Crime Minister” in English against Netanyahu’s prime ministerial tenure and banners criticizing far-right parties in the coalition government.
On the other hand, the former prime minister and current opposition leader Yair Lapid reiterated his support for the weeks-long demonstrations in a post on his Twitter account.
IT WAS A GREAT THING
Lapid shared, “We don’t live in this country just to pay taxes and send our kids to the military. In the great darkness of the last few months, something wonderful has also happened: the liberal camp has woken up. he used his statements.
Avigdor Lieberman, now the leader of the opposition Israel Our Home Party, who served as the country’s finance and defense minister, also joined the demonstrations in the city of Haifa.
PROTEST IN FRONT OF THE GALLANT DEFENSE HOUSE
Hundreds of protesters also gathered outside Defense Minister Yoav Gallant’s home in Amikam, in the north of the country.
The protesters reacted to Gallant, who canceled the speech he was scheduled to give last week to curb judicial regulation, following the initiative of Prime Minister Netanyahu.
THE DISCUSSIVE JURISDICTION OF THE GOVERNMENT
Israeli Justice Minister Yariv Levin announced on January 5 that they were planning a “judicial reform” that would limit the powers of the Supreme Court and reduce the influence of the judiciary in the selection of judges.
Israel’s Supreme Court, which acts as the country’s highest judicial authority, has the power to strike down laws passed by the Assembly on the grounds that they are incompatible with the “fundamental laws” accepted as a draft constitution.
With the judicial regulation announced, it is expected that the power to repeal the laws issued by the Assembly will be removed from the Supreme Court.
The bill, which is expected to be debated in the House this week, provides for the government to have a leading voice in the nomination of members of the Supreme Court so that it can nominate the Chief Justice.
The government’s judicial regulation, which restricts the powers of the judiciary and provides for the power to have a say in judicial appointments, was heavily criticized for limiting the powers of the judiciary within Israel and internationally.
Mass protests against judicial regulation of the Netanyahu government have continued for 12 weeks with the participation of hundreds of thousands. (AA)
