Iran’s National Security Council (SNSC) has threatened an “immediate counter-reaction” after US air strikes on Iran-backed bases in Syria killed nearly 20 people. According to Tehran it is present in Syria at the request of Damascus and the United States is the occupier of the Middle Eastern country. Iran is fighting alongside President Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian civil war.
“Any pretext to attack the bases we have established at the request of the Syrian government to fight terrorism, we will respond with an immediate counter-reaction,” a SNCS spokesman said.
The United States carried out the attack on Friday in retaliation after a US contractor was killed in a shelling attack by pro-Iranian fighters on Thursday. On Friday night, militias attacked another American base. Small-scale attacks on US military bases are common in Syria, but they rarely kill.
Drones
The United States says the pro-Iran militias are linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the regime’s elite body of Shia clerics. According to Washington, Iranian drones are also being used.
US President Joe Biden said after the US air strikes that the US “is not seeking a conflict with Iran, but is willing to take heavy-handed action to protect Americans.”
