Disaster off Tunisia… Ship sunk, migrants lost at sea

Fevzi Mesmudi, Judicial Officer of the Sfax Court, made a statement to the local press about the missing migrants.

Noting that irregular migration attempts have increased in recent days, Mesmudi said: “The ship that sank today is the fifth ship that has sunk in the last 48 hours. 4 people who fell into the sea from the boat were rescued by the Navy security forces. Search and rescue efforts continue for the other 34 people on the boat.” he used the phrases.

On the other hand, the spokesman for the National Security Forces, Husameddin al-Cebabli, announced yesterday in a written statement that the bodies of 7 irregular migrants were found, including a baby, and that 3,114 irregular migrants were detained.

Every year, thousands of irregular African migrants arrive in Tunisia to reach Europe by sea in the hope of a better life.

Some of the immigrants from sub-Saharan African countries, who have lived in Tunisian immigrant slums for many years, manage to reach Europe, while others die at sea. (AA)
