North Korean drone test that could lead to a ‘radioactive tsunami’

North Korea has announced that it is testing an underwater drone that could be used abroad and also generate a nuclear-capable “radioactive tsunami.”

According to the news from North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the underwater drone, called a “secret weapon”, was launched into the sea from the Riwon region of South Hamgyong city. The drone, named “Haeil”, which means “tsunami” in Korean, was detonated off the east coast after 59 hours and 12 minutes at a depth of 80 to 150 meters from the area where it was launched into the sea.

It was claimed that the drone was “designed to attack enemy ships and ports by generating a large-scale radioactive tsunami.” The drone can be used by dropping it from the port or ships into the sea.

REACTION EXERCISE TO THE USA AND SOUTH KOREA

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, who oversaw the drone’s tests, warned the United States and South Korea to halt military exercises that they were conducting “irresponsibly,” arguing that “acts of aggression” must be taken to the North realizes its “unlimited deterrence.”

The latest weapon North Korea claims to have developed is believed to be similar to Russian Poseidon torpedoes, which are claimed to be capable of generating radioactive ocean waves and nuclear tsunamis that could destroy US coastal cities.

On the other hand, according to the BBC report, experts argued that the capabilities of North Korea’s “secret weapon” may not be what is claimed.

South Korea is uncomfortable with the North’s intense weapons tests recently. According to the Yonhap report, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol reacted to the North’s nuclear submarine drone and intercontinental ballistic missile tests in his speech at the Western Sea Defense Day Commemoration Ceremony held in Daejeon National Cemetery.
