23 police officers who tortured inmates in Italian prison suspended

According to the news of the Italian agency ANSA, which is based on the judicial authorities, it was reported that 23 policemen in the Biella prison were dismissed by decision of the investigating judge due to the mistreatment of 3 prisoners, which amounted to torture.

It was claimed that the police were accused of “using brutal methods that cause extreme physical pain”.

It was claimed that the prosecutor’s office, which examined the situation in the Biella prison, reached elements supporting that other officials were complicit in the prison in question and that there was a general atmosphere of pressure.

The investigating judge, at the request of the prosecution on February 6, decided to impose house arrest on 27 prison officials who were declared involved in torture as part of a precautionary measure.

In 2020, when the Covid-19 epidemic began in the country, events broke out in the demonstrations in which the epidemic measures in prisons were protested and 12 prisoners lost their lives. During the repression of these events, 52 prison police officers, who were found to have used violence and mistreated prisoners, were suspended from their duties as a result of the investigation carried out in 2021.
