The European Commission is investigating the actions of the Hungarian European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi. This is what VVD MEP Bart Groothuis says in BNR’s De Wereld. According to Groothuis, Ukraine has requested written support from the EU regarding cybersecurity, but it is unclear what happened to the letter.
“Várhelyi is a stooge of Viktor Orbán and throws sand in the machine”
Groothuis spoke to Ukraine’s cybersecurity chief on an official mission and asked him what the country needed. ‘I asked ‘what do you need?’ And he says, “It’s a pretty big country. We actually need four cybersecurity centers across the country to get there faster.” I say: “But who did you report it to?” Yes, at the European Commission, it was here.’ I say, ‘Who then?’ “Yes, we delivered a letter to that commissioner, Várhelyi.”
Straw man
Groothuis calls Várhelyi “a stooge of Viktor Orbán”. “That’s a Hungarian European Commissioner. And it looks like he is throwing sand in the car.’ Groothuis says he has raised the issue with Foreign Affairs Commissioner Josep Borrell, but also with Margrethe Vestager and Thierry Breton. An investigation has now been launched into one of the colleagues to see what happened to the letter. That Hungarian is already a risk.’
