In the Netherlands, children can bear the surname of both parents.

In the written statement made by the Ministry of Law Protection, it was indicated that the law presented on the subject was also accepted in the Senate after the House of Representatives.

The statement indicated that the law will enter into force as of 2024, and that children can be given the surnames of both parents in the order that the parents want.

It was noted that the double surname will indicate the child’s connection to both parents, parents can use this option for babies born after January 1, 2024.

It was claimed that in the Netherlands, children automatically receive the father’s surname since 1811, and since 1998 it is possible to give the mother’s surname instead of the father’s surname.

It was shared that the choice of double surname is not mandatory. (AA)
