Some of the most affordable housing in California is in mobile home parks. According to Census data, residents there pay about half the monthly housing costs as those who live in single-family homes in the state.

But California’s method of overseeing mobile home parks is full of loopholes, finds a new story from CalMatters’ Manuela Tobas. That has led to squalid conditions for some residents, including those who were surrounded by sewage for months at a park outside Stockton.

In this episode of “Gimme Shelter: The California Housing Crisis Podcast,” we discuss Tobas’ piece on the state’s limited enforcement of issues at mobile home parks across the state.

This is also Tobas’ last episode with “Gimme Shelter” as she leaves to pursue journalism in her native country

country of

Argentina. The Times and CalMatters hope to resume the podcast with a new co-host after a short hiatus.
