Bloomberg Election Analysis: Erdogan’s Chances Have Diminished
While the electoral process in Turkey was followed with great interest in the world press, the American press published a remarkable analysis of the events.
The US-based news agency Bloomberg drew attention to the fact that the HDP, which describes itself as “the key party in the elections”, will not nominate a presidential candidate, which will reduce the chances of the president. Tayyip Erdogan to keep his power.
Components of the Alliance for Labor and Freedom, Labor Movement Party (EHP), Labor Party (EMEP), Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), Socialist Assemblies Federation (SMF), Workers’ Party of Turkey (TIP) ) and Partido de la Libertad Social (UP), announced yesterday that it would not nominate candidates in the presidential elections on May 14.
In the joint statement read by HDP co-chair Pervin Buldan, “The economic and social policies implemented by the AKP government in the last twenty-one years have created great destruction in all areas of life; practices that restrict freedoms, based on oppression and illegality, know no limits. The multiple problems that we experience, stagnation and severe depression are deepening day by day. The AKP-MHP government has stolen the present of the society and threatens its future,” he said.
‘WILL INCREASE THE CHANCES OF ELIMINATING ERDOGAN’
Drawing attention to Buldan’s statement that “we will campaign against the one-man government”, Bloomberg stated that this decision will increase the chances of Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the Nation Alliance’s presidential candidate, using the expressions “a step that will increase the possibility of the main opposition coalition removing Erdogan from the seat”.
In the article, it was recalled that the HDP played a pivotal role in the previous elections and blocked the votes of pro-government candidates in the 2019 mayoral elections.
The analysis also noted that Kılıçdaroğlu is seen by the majority of HDP voters as “a politician who will help protect the rights of the Kurdish minority in Turkey.” The article commented that the growing unity of the opposition made it difficult for Erdogan, who was criticized due to the earthquakes and the economic crisis.
