EU to combat greenwashing

The EU Commission has announced its proposed regulation that includes new rules to protect consumers, make sustainable choices and end greenwashing. Accordingly, action will be taken against false information and misleading environmental claims that qualify as “greenwashing” and are disseminated by a company to enhance its image of environmental responsibility.
Companies will need to verify their green claims about their products or services with independent bodies and scientific studies. In this way, the true environmental impact of your products will become clear.

Phrases like recycled plastic, carbon stable, sea or ocean friendly cannot be used without proof.

Consumers will have more clarity and security about whether a product is green or not. Thus, companies that strive to improve the environmental sustainability of their products will be more easily recognized and distinguished.

In an EU study on green dyeing, it was revealed that 53 percent of products whose environmental claims were examined in member countries were vague, misleading or unfounded, and 40 percent of products were unconfirmed.

The approval of the European Parliament (EP) and member states is required for the proposal to enter into force. (AA)
