The 70-year plan is back on the Italian agenda

The right-wing coalition government in Italy, headed by Giorgia Meloni, adopted a decree to immediately start the planning and construction process of the “Messina Strait Bridge” project, which will connect the Italian mainland and the island of Sicily. .

The right-wing coalition government took a new step for the Messina Strait Bridge, which was put on the agenda for the first time in the country in the early 1950s, and although it was designed many times, its construction could not be started. most of the time due to financial difficulties, so its construction became a ‘snake story’.

The council of ministers convened under the presidency of Prime Minister Meloni approved last night a decree for the construction of the Strait of Messina Bridge. Consequently, the cabinet gave the green light to a decision that allows the process of design, planning and construction of the project to be restarted.

In the written statement made by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, it was reported that the Company of the Strait of Messina, which is responsible for the construction of the bridge, aims to reactivate it by giving it a more modern structure within the scope of the decree. approved by the council of ministers. In the statement, it was noted that the construction of the bridge will be based on the final project of 2011, and the project in question will be updated according to the new technical, safety and environmental standards of the time.

THE LONGEST SUSPENDED BRIDGE IN THE WORLD

In the ministry’s statement, it was emphasized that the Strait of Messina Bridge, which will be the longest suspension bridge in the world with a length of 3.2 kilometers when completed, will be the driving force for the growth of the Sicily and Calabria regions. .

For his part, the Deputy Prime Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Matteo Salvini evaluated the decision taken by the Council of Ministers for the Strait of Messina Bridge, which he has indicated as one of his important objectives since he took office, as “one day historic not only for Sicily or Calabria, but for all of Italy”.

Salvini previously said that his goal is to start construction on the bridge in 2024.
The Messina Strait Bridge, Italy’s 70-year-old dream, was shelved indefinitely in 2011 by the technocratic government headed by Mario Monti, citing the financial and economic crisis.

On the other hand, the council of ministers made some decisions to implement critical regulations for tax reform in the country, in addition to the decision of the Strait of Messina Bridge. (AA)
