The government of French President Macron wants to implement the controversial pension reform without going through parliament. Only a vote of no confidence can stop this, which would mean the fall of the French government.
The majority of the senate supports the law, in parliament the proportions are different. However, article 49.3 of the French constitutional law allows the government to bypass the parliament. In any case, the unions have already announced that they will continue their actions against the pension funds.

Demonstrations are also taking place in Paris today against the government’s plans to marginalize parliament. For example, it is crowded on the Place de la Concorde, opposite the Assemblée Nationale building. And inside parliament, Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne was mocked as the French national anthem was sung.

The opposition now has 24 hours to submit a vote of no confidence. And while most of the opposition parties are really upset about the measure, the question is whether the motion will get enough support. “Les Républicains, the French VVD, will probably not vote,” says correspondent Eveline Bijlsma. ‘This party previously played a key role in pension law and now it can happen again. But the leader of the party (Éric Ciotti, ed) has said that whoever votes with the motion will be kicked out of the party’.

If the motion of no confidence is supported, then both the prime minister and all ministers must resign. Macron himself could remain seated. But Macron himself said he would dissolve the entire parliament if the motion was supported by the majority. And perhaps this is also what holds Les Républicains back. Because the new parliamentary elections are not in his favor at all”.
The government considers the existing pension system to be outdated and unsustainable, so adjustments would be needed. According to the unions, these adjustments are not going well at all. One of the plans is to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64. Demonstrations against pension plans have been going on for months across France.
