Death toll rises at ‘Suri Wednesday’ celebrations in Iran

It was reported that 26 people lost their lives and 4,368 people were injured in the “Suri Wednesday” celebrations held on the last Wednesday night of the year according to the Hijri Shamsi calendar in Iran.

According to Iran’s official news agency IRNA, the head of Iran’s Emergency Center Cafer Miadfer gave information about the events that took place at the “Wednesday Suri” celebrations. Miadfer said: “26 people lost their lives in the accidents. “4,368 people were injured,” he said.

Stating that most of the fatal accidents occurred in Tehran, Tabriz, Hamedan, Urmia, Qazvin and Fars provinces, Miadfer noted that there was a 22 percent increase in injuries this year compared to last year.

In the celebrations held on the night of the last Wednesday of the year before the New Year (Nowruz) in Iran, especially children and young people; Jump over the fires and set fireworks and sparklers on fire. The accidents experienced during these celebrations and the previous preparations cause dozens of deaths and hundreds of injuries in the country each year.
