Mexican Leader: This place is safer than the US.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has described the US government’s travel warnings to Mexico as a smear campaign, saying his country is safer than the United States.
Speaking at the daily press conference, López Obrador said: “People can safely travel to Mexico. There is no problem in that regard, and both American citizens and our own citizens know that very well,” he said. López Obrador affirmed that conservative politicians in the US are trying to show Mexico as a failed state and that in this way they want to damage the success of his administration.
López Obrador said that the US is trying to create a perception of mistrust to say that his government is not working.
Pointing out that many Americans have settled in Mexico in recent years, López Obrador qualified US travel advisories.
After 2 of 4 kidnapped US citizens in Mexico were found dead, the US warned 6 states in Mexico “Don’t travel” and 24 to “Travel carefully.” By declaring only two states safe to travel to, the US warned its citizens that “crimes such as murder, kidnapping, car theft, and robbery are common in Mexico.” (AA)
